This happens when excessive amounts are excreted through the kidneys and urine. The kidneys are responsible for not only Magnesium excretion but also its reabsoption into the body for further use.Normally approximately 2400mg of Magnesium is filtered by the kidneys per day, 90-95% is retrieved.

Drugs such as diuretics, cytotoxic drugs, antimicrobial agents, beta adrenergic antagonists (“beta Blockers” or “blood pressure” medication) will increase Magnesium excretion. Even though in some cases the ailments the medication is treating will be benefited by a good Magnesium supplement.

Some food additives such as mannitol  can cause a marked increase in Magnesium excretion.
